Relief for thirsty Harare, as Lake Chievero starts spilling

Harare’s major water supply source, Lake Chivero, is now 100 percent full due to the perpetual heavy precipitation witnessed in Harare.

The Mayor of Harare, Councilor Bernard Manyenyeni, was on cloud nine today saying that “Our major water supply dam Lake Chivero started spilling today at 8 am”.

He went on to say that “Our raw water quality will improve so much with the inflows and outflows” confirming assertions by residents that municipal water quality is poor.

This latest development comes at a time when municipal water quality and quantity is under attack from residents with some linking it to the recent typhoid outbreak in Harare.

However, the Mayor blasted the senior water department team for complacency and lack of passion in their area of work as they failed to fulfill the assignment to establish the water levels a week ago only to be told by “friends” who live around the lake of the development.

On another development, Council now has an up-to-date audited account for the first time in 20 years. “I think I was the only person who believed this was indeed a champagne-popping event,” said Manyenyeni.

The citizens of Harare welcomed the development and showered praises on the Mayor of Harare, however other residents felt that water quantity and quality should improve in the city considering the availability of better raw water at Lake Chivero.

Meanwhile the Harare Water Department has increased water production from 400 megalitres per day to 458 megalitres. The Chitungwiza Director of Works advised Harare Water that water supply has increased from 9 ML/day to 18.5 ML/day in Chitungwiza.

Community Water Alliance Chairperson, Ms Rwambiwa, rebuffed claims by the Harare Water Department citing that the increase of water production has mainly been seen in figures only but on the ground the situation remains the same, as most residents are now relying on water harvesting.

Inspiring Quotations

"The determined efforts, and spirited focus by Zimbabweans from all paths and circles of life against authoritarianism as epitomised by #Tajamuka, #ThisFlag, churches, political parties, individuals etc just transmits a 'zing' of confidence, hope and dawn of a new dispensation from my skull nerves to my balls right to the tip of my foot. Authoritarianism and the despotic dispensation are under electrocution."
- Adolf, Kubatana subscriber in reply to our question asking what keeps people inspired during these tough times
" It was good and permissible when the flag since 1980 was carried by every Harry and Tom to Rufaro Stadium or National Sports Stadium to support Zimbabwe's national team the Warriors. It is good and permissible when the flag is carried about by women and children flocking to the airport to routinely receive the President from his many foreign travels. It is good and permissible if the flag is mutilated and redesigned on the party regalia of the country's self-acclaimed LIFE RULING SINGLE PARTY. It is now bad and not permissible when it is carried by those who demand that the sacrifices of those who lost their lives and years in the liberation struggle be respected by those in power through fighting corruption; practising good governance; public accountability by bringing to book those who are responsible for the missing $15 billion diamond revenues; fiscal austerity by cutting down on the many annual trips the President embarks on; by cutting on extravagance through avoiding the purchase of expensive Range Rovers when the govt is very broke to the point of asking for financial help from those it says are destabilising the economy and country."
