Opposition leaders under the National Election Reform Agenda or NERA are expected to meet next week following police refusal for the grouping to take to the streets in a demonstration demanding electoral reforms that had been planned for Tuesday.
NERA organizing committee chairperson, Joelson Mugari told Studio Seven that police told them that they were wasting time applying to the regulation authority, which is the police.
“When we went to the police station, an officer told us that we are wasting our time as we will not be,” he said.
The decision to demonstrate was given the go ahead despite a meeting held on Monday between NERA and the Zimbabwe Election Commission to iron out the differences between them.
The meeting between the two parties did not yield any positive results as the electoral body is reported to have dug in on its position of not adhering to NERA’s demands.
“We knew that it was going to be banned under the circumstances but now we rare going to have an urgent meeting of all political parties. So we have called in an urgent meeting for the the principals,” he said.
The principals in the parties under NERA include Morgan Tsvangirai, MDC-T leander and former Vice President, Joice Mujuru of the Zimbabwe People First party.
