Zimbabwe’s protest group, Tajamuka-Sesijikile Campaign on Monday attempted to effect a citizen’s arrest on Higher Education Minister Jonathan Moyo at his office in Harare following indications that he diverted state funds to finance the ruling Zanu PF party’s activities.
Tajamuka spokesperson, Promise Mkwananzi, told VOA Studio 7 that they wanted to effect the arrest and hand Prof. Moyo to the local police.
“We wanted to apprehend Jonathan Moyo and his colleagues who have been diverting students’ funds to finance Zanu PF projects. We have realized that the country’s laws have not been properly used to arrest him and therefore as citizens we thought of arresting him and taking him to the police so that he can be tried and convicted since he has admitted that he used the money for funding Zanu PF activities,” said Mkwananzi.
Tajamuka-Sesijikile Campaign was unable to get into Prof. Moyo’s office as it was sealed by security agents.
In turn, members of Tajamuka left wrote some graffiti outside the minister’s office demanding his immediate arrest.
Professor Moyo was not reachable for comment as he was said to be busy attending some meetings.
Police were not available for comment as critics say the people spearheading Prof. Moyo belong to a faction of the party led by vice president Emmerson Mnangagwa, which wants him to allegedly succeed the 92 year-old Zimbabwean leader.
The other faction, which is allegedly the brain-child of Professor Moyo and Zanu PF political commissar Saviour Kasukuwere and calling itself Generation 40, is said to be led by First Lady Grace Mugabe. She allegedly habours presidential ambitions.
